The number of papers submitted in 1985 (Table 1) was less than in 1984 and 1983 but more than in 1982 and previous years. Although more editorial pages were published (Table 2), fewer papers occupied those pages. This is because the average paper length has increased; since JRF starts each
paper on a right-hand page to avoid problems with offprints, any paper that extends onto a righthand page (odd numbers) also encompasses the corresponding left hand page even if that remains blank.
The publication time (Table 2) increased in 1985 but this was primarily due to marked delays at the printers for the first 4 issues of the year. The time from receipt of papers to publication for the last 2 issues of the year when a new printer was being used was 8·8 months and further reductions are apparent in the 1986 issues.
