The interest shown in the Editorial Report for 1976 has encouraged us to continue publication of the analyses of papers submitted (Table 1) and published (Table 2) in the Journal of Reproduction and Fertility. The slightly reduced number of papers submitted is disappointing, as is the slightly higher rejection rate compared with that in 1976. No paper is rejected because of language difficulties or poor presentation, although such problems do make it more difficult for the referees to assess the scientific value of the work. The final acceptance rate will be higher (about 45%) than
indicated when the acceptable papers in the 'pending' group are finally clarified. The slowness of many authors to reply to letters of enquiry, and sometimes even to return manuscripts which have been edited and are practically ready for press, is a growing cause for concern. The publication time for papers has increased slightly over that in 1976 but examination of the detailed figures showed that the delay occurred for the issues published later in the year and can be attributed to the disruption caused by a fire in the Editorial Office. Fortunately, the loss of manuscript material was slight.
