LUTEOLYTIC FACTOR IN STALLION SEMEN

Bielanski et al. (1974) demonstrated that oestrus and ovulation could be produced in anoestrous and dioestrous mares by the introduction of stallion semen into the uterus. Their results suggested that stallion semen may contain a luteolytic factor. Prostaglandin F2{alpha} (PGF2{alpha}) is well known to be luteolytic in many species (McCracken et al., 1970). The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of PGF2{alpha} and stallion semen on the CL.

Thirty-three pseudopregnant rabbits were assigned to Groups A, B and C (Table 1). Ovulation was induced with 100 i.u. HCG. Physiological saline, PGF2{alpha} (trimethonium salt of PGF2{alpha}, `Prostin F2alpha': Upjohn Company) and stallion semen, respectively, were introduced into the lumen of one uterine horn during laparotomy carried out on two different days
