ANOVULATORY UTERINE BLEEDING AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF MSH TO WOMEN WITH SECONDARY AMENORRHOEA

ABBA J. KASTIN, A. ZARATE, M. CLINTON MILLER, III, S. HERNANDEZ-AYUP, KJELL DYSTER-AAS, C. GUAL and A. V. SCHALLY

Summary.: Synthetic and highly purified {alpha}-MSH or control solutions were infused into eight women with secondary amenorrhoea in a double-blind study. Uterine bleeding occurred in three of the four subjects receiving the MSH and one of the controls 13 to 16 days later; another woman, receiving diluent as a control, bled 36 days later. Since no changes in the endometrial biopsy specimens, vaginal cytology, or urinary pregnanediol values were found, it is suggested that the uterine bleeding may not be accompanied by ovulation.
