The experiments reported in this communication were carried out as part of a continuing quest for a simple method of inducing ovulation during anoestrus in the sheep. Although treatment with oestrogen stimulates the release of LH (Goding, Catt, Brown, Kaltenbach, Cumming & Mole, 1969; Radford, Wheatley & Wallace, 1969), and can induce ovulation during anoestrus (Radford, Wallace & Wheatley, 1970a), fertilization was not achieved following such treatment (Radford, Wallace & Wheatley, 1970b). Another approach investigated was stimulation of the release of FSH in the expectation that once this was initiated, release of LH and ovulation would follow subsequently.
