Glover & Sale (1968) described the occurrence of sexually active and sexually quiescent males in colonies of rock hyrax, Procavia and Heterohyrax, in East Africa, but previous attention has not been drawn to seasonal changes in the reproductive tract of the male South African dassie, Procavia capensis.
This work is part of a wider investigation of the ecology and reproduction of male dassies and the animals were collected in the Cape Province throughout the year. Examination of their reproductive tracts revealed that they are sexually quiescent between May and January. This is indicated by their having small testes, seminal vesicles and bulbo-urethral glands and by the total absence of spermatozoa in their reproductive tracts (Table 1).
