THE INFLUENCE OF PROLACTIN ON THE REPRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY OF THE JAPANESE QUAIL, COTURNIX COTURNIX JAPONICA

As the effect of prolactin on the reproductive cycle of birds has been of great interest (Riddle & Bates, 1933; Breneman, 1942; Bayley, 1950; Lofts & Marshall, 1956; Laws & Farner, 1960; Thapliyal & Saxena, 1964; Meier & Davis, 1967; Della Corte, Bracci & Cosenza, 1967; Lofts & Murton, 1968) and the results obtained not always consistent, research was undertaken on adult Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with the purpose of studying the influence of prolactin on: (a) body weight; (b) egg production; (c) testicular morphology and function; (d) activity, in males, of the cloacal gland (an androgen-dependent structure in this sub-species).

In Exp. 1, thirty-six adult female quails, 70 days old, were subdivided into twelve groups of three individuals each and maintained in separate cages at the same temperature and photoperiod (16 hr light/8 hr dark) for
