OVARIAN FOLLICULAR CHANGES IN HEIFERS TREATED WITH MELENGESTROL ACETATE

H. D. GUTHRIE, D. R. LAMOND, D. M. HENRICKS and J. F. DICKEY

Summary.: The ovaries of two heifers treated with melengestrol acetate (MGA) for 21 days were removed and examined histologically. Each pair of ovaries contained one luteinized atretic follicle, about 1·8 cm in diameter, and numerous atretic follicles of up to 4 mm in diameter. In these latter follicles, many cells of the membrana granulosa were indistinct and contained pycnotic nuclei, the membrana propria was intact and the theca interna was thickened and contained many glandular cells and blood vessels. The histological observations were related to other data concerning the effects of MGA on ovarian function.
