Summary.: The upward migration of bull spermatozoa into a sperm-free medium in a Tiselius type diffusion cell, was measured with a photoelectric scanning device.
After about 30 min, upward diffusion ceased and the system reached a steady state distribution of sperm concentrations.
Among the spermatozoa which `diluted' themselves by migrating into the sperm-free medium, there was a high mortality rate. As a result, the system reached a steady state in which the upward diffusion rate of the motile spermatozoa and the downward sedimentation rate of the dead cells were equal.
