STIMULATION OF THE OVARY IN HYPOPHYSECTOMIZED HENS BY AN AVIAN PITUITARY PREPARATION

MARGARET E. MITCHELL

Summary.: The rate of regression of the ovary and ovary-dependent organs of hypophysectomized hens was determined. Daily intramuscular injections of acetone-dried avian pituitary powder started 10 to 14 days after pituitary removal, when this regression was complete. Treatment with the equivalent of forty whole glands daily for 12 days restored development of a graded follicle series, resembling that of a normal functional ovary. An accompanying recovery of the ovarian endocrine function was detected by changes in secondary sexual characters.
